Chapter 19: Canary in a Coalmine (The Police, 1980)

Let's go see what is in that mine we found a while back.

>open sack

Opening the brown sack reveals:

  A clove of garlic.

  A lunch.

Check yourself! You need the lamp, torch, garlic, screwdriver and the egg (unless you already gave it to the Thief). Use the inventory command to see what you are carrying and then take accordingly.

East-West Passage

>east

Winding Passage

>east

Mirror Room

>touch mirror

There is a rumble from deep within the earth, and the room shakes.

>west

Cold Passage

>west

Slide Room

>north

Mine Entrance

Northeast or northwest? I'm in a Hitchcock mood, so let's go northwest.

>nw

[Squeaky Room] You are a small room. Strange squeaky sounds may be heard coming from the passage at the west end. You may also escape to the south.

Squeaky sounds? I guess it was inevitable we would find rodents down here. Could be worse…could be snakes...I hate snakes.

>west

[Bat Room] This is a small room that has only one door, to the east. In the corner of the room on the ceiling is a large vampire bat who is obviously deranged and holding his nose. There is a jade figurine here.

Oh joy...a rat with wings. Good thing we were carrying the garlic. If the garlic was not present or if you are crazy enough to try and take the bat, the full power of this giant vampire bat (a reject from Hunt the Wumpus) is revealed as it swoops down from the belfry and lifts you away to die.

>take figurine

Taken.

>east

Squeaky Room

>drop garlic

Dropped.

>south

Mine Entrance

Okay, this time it's northeast

>ne

[Shaft Room] This is a large room, in the middle of which is a small shaft descending through the floor into darkness below. To the west and the north are exits from this room. Constructed over the top of the shaft is a metal framework to which a heavy iron chain is attached. At the end of the chain is a basket.

Unlike the bucket in the well, the basket has a chain and means to lower and raise it (presumably some sort of crank, but that is left to our imagination). It also isn't large enough to hold you and it cannot be removed from the room. Lowering and raising the basket does nothing at this point, so there must be another way to get to the bottom of the shaft.

>north

[Wooden tunnel] This is a narrow tunnel with large wooden beams running across the ceiling and around the walls. A path from the south splits into paths running west and northeast.

>ne

[Coal Mine #1] This is a non-descript part of a coal mine.

Happy happy joy joy! Another maze!

>north

[Coal Mine #2] This is a non-descript part of a coal mine.

>ne

[Coal Mine #3] This is a non-descript part of a coal mine.

>nw

[Coal Mine #4] This is a non-descript part of a coal mine.

>down

[Ladder Top] This is a very small room. In the corner is a rickety wooden ladder, leading downward. It might be safe to descend. There is also a staircase leading upward.

>down

[Ladder Bottom] This is a rather wide room. On one side is the bottom of a narrow wooden ladder. To the northeast and the south are passages leaving the room.

>ne

[Dead End] There is a small heap of coal here.

Must be good for something, and we're not carrying much, so take the coal.

>take coal

Taken.

>south

Ladder Bottom

>south

[Timber Room] This is a long and narrow passage. A wide passage comes from the north and turns at the southwest corner of the room into a very narrow passageway.

There is a narrow passageway here. There is a wooden timber on the ground here.

>sw

You cannot fit through this passage with that load.

Turns out you can't fit through there carrying anything but you. I'm not ready to be eaten by a grue just yet, so we'll look around some more.

>north

Ladder Bottom

>up

Ladder Top

>up

Coal Mine #4

>east

Coal Mine #1

>east

Wooden Tunnel

>save

Saved.
